Unniappam or Unniyappam are sweet cakes made with rice, Jaggery, banana, spices, and coconut. Unniyappam is one of the unique sweets prepared and served in almost all the festivals and celebrations in Kerala like Vishu, Onam, Christmas. In temples, they also offer them as Prasadam in some temples in Kerala.

Unniappam is a popular recipe in Kerala, and it is one of the sweets or snacks loved by almost everyone, like young, old, or kids. We can make Unniyappam with the items available at our home. Unni in Malayalam means small, Appam means rice cake, and Unniyappam means small rice cake. Gluten-free and vegan recipe.

Unniappam, also called Karollappam, is a small round snack. Variations of this organic and spongy fried batter using jackfruit preserves instead of banana have been common since the late 2000s. It is a popular snack in Kerala.

Ingredients of Unniappam Recipe: 

Raw Rice /Rice flour: 2 cups

Ripe Small Bananas: 4 nos

Jaggery: 450 grams (more or less as per taste)

Black Sesame Seeds /Ellu: 1 tbsp

Coconut bits /Thenga kothu: 1/2 cup or as needed

Cardamom: 3-4 pods

Salt: one pinch

Coconut Oil or Ghee for frying

Method to Prepare Unniappam:

Unni appam can be served hot or can be stored for a few days. People in Kerala have Unni Appam as a snack or a side dish on occasions.
